The field of acoustics has had an enduring impact on
the life sciences (hearing and speech), the arts (architectural acoustics
and music), engineering (noise control and vibration), and geology (seismic
waves). At Ohio University, we are interested in using acoustics, particularly
ultrasonics, as a tool for studying molecular reactions, the structure
of solids, and critical phenomena in liquids. To this end, we measure
the velocity and absorption of ultrasonic buld and surface waves in
matter. Recently, the acoustics group has been particularly interested
in semiconductors, glasses, liquid mixtures, and polymer solutions,
radiation and the electrical impedance of ultrasonic transducers.
