and not to the address specified in the checklists. Letters of reference
should also be sent directly to the Physics & Astronomy Department, and
not to McKee House.
If, for some reason, you cannot apply online, please let us know by
emailing us at the above address, and we will send you an application
form. You can then simply send your entire application (including the
form and supporting materials such as the personal statement, transcript
originals, and the other items on the checklist) to us at the above
address. In this case the usal $45 application fee will also be
waived.
Virtually all students in the Physics & Astronomy Department are
supported financially, usually via a teaching assistantship (TA)
during their first one or two years, and a research associateship (RA)
thereafter. There is no separate form on which to apply for financial
aid. Instead just check the box or write "yes" to the question on the
application form for admission to graduate school.
Students holding a TA appointment are assigned duties in the
department which nominally require fifteen to twenty hours per week to perform.
Most of the duties involve teaching undergraduate laboratory sessions,
help sessions and grading homework papers. TAs also occasionally teach
recitation sessions. Advanced graduate students, in particular doctoral
candidates, are commonly awarded RA appointments, subject to approval by the
student's research advisor and availability of external grant funds.
RA appointments are intended to support student research, and
consequently do not include teaching duties.
Stipends for TA appointments in the Physics & Astronomy Department
have been set at $20,385 per year including Summer.
RAs are provided stipend support at a level comparable
to TAs. All assistantships are accompanied by a fee waiver scholarship
that pays for the instructional fee and (if applicable) the non-resident
surcharge. Graduate students remain responsible for paying general
fees of approximately $400 per academic quarter required by the
university and a tech fee of $50 per quarter. Students not otherwise covered
by health insurance must pay a $1200 annual premium for student health
insurance. If you plan to bring any dependents to the U.S., insurance
costs can be found at www.ohio.edu/graduate/international/iexpenses.cfm. International students also pay a one-time $70
orientation fee. The cost of living in Athens is relatively low, and
stipends provided via TA and research assistantships are sufficient to completely finance a
graduate education.
Teaching appointments require adequate communication skills in the
English language. Applicants from countries where the first language
is not English must demonstrate their proficiency in English in order
to be awarded an appointment. We prefer that applicants take the Test
of Spoken English (TSE) in addition to the TOEFL exam. If you have not
taken the TSE, then a total TOEFL score of at least 600 together with
a score of 60 or better on the listening comprehension component (or
250 and 25 for the computerized exam) are required . In any event,
the University will administer a TOEFL exam to students from
such countries as soon as they arrive on campus in order to verify
their proficiency in the language.
