GENERAL COMMENTS
In any course of study it is necessary to establish a vocabulary, a list of well-defined terms, that will allow you to communicate effectively with others about the material you are studying. It makes no difference if the subject is history, English, psychology, or one of the natural sciences such as we are dealing with here. If you are not familiar with the language, you will be as confused as if the whole course were conducted in German (or some other foreign language that you do not speak). For this reason we must start with some basic concepts about science in general, and about astronomy in particular. Look at the following:
