James T. Shipman Scholarship
|
The Department of Physics and Astronomy annually awards a number
of James T. Shipman Scholarships. Awards are currently $1,500 per
year, and can be renewed for students with good academic performance.
These scholarships are awarded directly by the Department of Physics and
Astronomy, and are separate from standard university scholarships, which
are awarded by the Office of Financial Aid.
At least one scholarship per year will be preferentially awarded
to students from groups traditionally underrepresented in physics and
astronomy.
Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens, and must major in
one of the Physics and Astronomy Department's bachelor's degree
programs.
Selection criteria include high school grades, ACT/SAT scores,
reference letters and an essay.
Typically five or six first-year majors in the Department of
Physics and Astronomy receive Shipman scholarships.
The Shipman Scholarship has its own application form,
which must be sent directly to the Department before February
1. To request this form, please see the email or mail address
given at the bottom of this web page.
