What is LON-CAPA?
LON-CAPA is an open-source learning content and resource management system. It has been developed by a community of programmers led by Michigan State University, and is in use at a number of major universities world-wide. The strength of the LON-CAPA system is the variety of problem types and the sharing of resources between institutions.
The system is currently used by the Department of Physics and Astronomy to provide online assignments and course materials. It is being used in our Algebra-based (Physics 2000) and Calculus-based (Physics 2050) introductory series, as well as a number of our Physical Sciences classes.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio University has had close ties with Michigan State over the last decade, first as one of the first to use the CAPA system in 1994 and now as a pilot user and contributor to LON-CAPA. LON-CAPA builds on the experience of the CAPA group at MSU as well as a parallel project, Learning ONline.
The system provides an excellent framework
for sharing of resources between courses, departments, or institutions.
