What is LON-CAPA?

LON-CAPA is an open-source learning content and resource management system. It has been developed by a community of programmers led by Michigan State University, and is in use at a number of major universities world-wide. The strength of the LON-CAPA system is the variety of problem types and the sharing of resources between institutions.

Local Usage

The system is currently used by the Department of Physics and Astronomy to provide online assignments and course materials. It is being used in our Algebra-based (Physics 200) and Calculus-based (Physics 250) introductory series, as well as a number of our Physical Sciences classes.

Local History

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio University has had close ties with Michigan State over the last decade, first as one of the first to use the CAPA system in 1994 and now as a pilot user and contributor to LON-CAPA. LON-CAPA builds on the experience of the CAPA group at MSU as well as a parallel project, Learning ONline.

More Information

The system provides an excellent framework for sharing of resources between courses, departments, or institutions. Materials developed at one institution can be published and shared seamlesslessly with other institutions. This helps distribute the task of developing computer-based assessment materials (like homework problems) and other class materials. Records of student performance also provide a rich database for education studies.

More information about the system is available at http://lon-capa.org. If you are interested in setting up a local course or learning more about the system at Ohio University, you can contact Dr. Mark Lucas at at lucasm@ohio.edu.

High School Outreach and Hosting

As part of the outreach of our department, we have been working with Athens High School for several years to provide hosting of online materials for the science classes. We have recently expanded to include work with several teachers from Trimble High School. Contact Dr. Lucas if you wish to learn more about the system.

Contact Coordinator

Dr. Mark Lucas is the LON-CAPA system manager for the Department of Physics and Astronomy. If you have any questions about the system, you can contact him at lucasm@ohio.edu.
