Mangala Sharma's research focuses on galaxies beyond the Milky Way.
She has spent many nights under the domes of medium-sized optical
telescopes, gathering distant photons to explore how galaxies interact
with their environments. Currently, she is studying the diffuse
stellar debris in groups of galaxies to figure out how the galaxies
may have collided.
Sharma's Ph.D. work was done at the Indian Institute of
Astrophysics. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Ohio University, and a
lecturer of astronomy/astrophysics at the Pennsylvania State
University. Currently, she teaches university courses in astronomy
and the physical sciences, and is involved in providing professional
development programs to science teachers.
Sharma leads a program forging collaborations among Ohio University's
scientists and the Athens community to communicate science to the
public.
