BNNT faculty members Drs. Saw W. Hla, Nancy Sandler and Sergio Ulloa are part of a four person team at Ohio University who received the prestigious NSF grant called PIRE (Partnerships for International Research and Education). This highly competitive award is only awarded to 16 proposals out of over 500 that are submitted across many scientific disciplines. It is a 5 year grant with the total award amount of $2.5 M. Dr. Arthur Smith (Physics and Astronomy) is the P.I. on this project.
The proposal funded under PIRE is named SPIRE (Spin-polarized PIRE) and under this program this team will form an international collaboration involving faculty from the University of Hamburg in Germany and a research group from Argentina. Over the next 5 years, 10 graduate students, 10 undergraduate students, and post docs from the OU-PIRE group will travel to Germany and Argentina for collaborative research projects. A number of journalism students from the OU Scripps School of Journalism will also travel to learn scientific writing in an international atmosphere. This program is a strategic collaboration of world leading nanoscience research groups on a global stage.
BNNT announces its Fall Research Poster Competition to be held November 2nd, 2007. The competition will be divided into two categories: undergraduate research and graduate research. The undergraduate division is open to undergraduates from Ohio University and students from surrounding universities doing research in the broad field of nanoscience. The graduate division is open to graduate students active in a BNNT, CMSS or NQPI Research Group also pursuing nanoscience research. The competition will be held at Baker Center at Ohio University. To register, please contact Meg Van Patten at vanpattm@ohio.edu
Dr. Shuming Nie of Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology will visit Ohio University on November 1-3, 2007. BNNT is honored to host such a world renowned researcher as part of their Outstanding Researcher Seminar series. Dr. Nie will present a talk entitled “"Biomedical Nanotechnology for Molecular Imaging and Targeted Therapy: Bridging Chemistry, Engineering, and Medicine." To read more about his research, visit http://www.nielab.org/. For more information on Dr. Nie’s visit, contact Meg Van Patten at vanpattm@ohio.edu.
BNNT hosted its first Research Poster Competition on April 20, 2007. Undergraduate researchers from six schools participated with the top prize going to a student from Notre Dame University. Second and third place prizes went to students from Russ Hulman Institute of Technology and the University of Akron. Graduate students from the Rack research group, the Van Patten research group and the Richardson research group at Ohio University walked away with the top three prizes in the graduate division of the competition. All of the participants enjoyed a scientific talk given by Ohio University Distinguished Professor Dr. Tad Malinksi which was followed by an evening reception.
