RESEARCH: Present research centers on coupled diode resonators, from a pair, a chain of 32, to a 16 by 16 array. Using these systems we have done work in the fields of chaos and stochastic resonance. Future work will aim toward the control of spatiotemporal chaos and spatiotemporal stochastic resonance.

EXAMPLE OF A SPIRAL WAVE: A spiral wave generated in our 16 by 16 array is shown by clicking (someplace). Each diode resonator is driven in period-2 to obtain a system of coupled bistable elements. One phase of the period-2 can be made less stable than he other by adding a signal at half the drive frequency to each element. With this arrangement we can put each all the elements in a metastable state. Then, for example, to produce various types of waves, we initially induce appropriate tramsitions. For the spiral wave shown, we initially induce a column of four elements at the bottem center and remove the coupling to the left of these four.
