Physics 200 Series - Introduction to Physics

Click here to access LON-CAPA for this quarter's course materials and assignments (password and course enrollment required).

Overview

The Physics 200 series is a 3-quarter introduction to physics which covers standard topics in classical mechanics, waves and sound, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics and modern physics. While there is no formal prerequisite, students should have good working knowledge of high school-level algebra and trigonometry. No calculus is required. The series is recommended for students in liberal arts, architecture, industrial technology, geological sciences, plant biology, and premedicine.

Schedule of Offerings

The Physics 200 sequence is typically offered on the Athens Campus in three sequences: a main sequence, trailer, and summer. While this can be used as a general guideline, please refer to the official listings from the registrar for definitive schedules and offerings.
Fall Winter Spring Summer
PHYS 201PHYS 201 PHYS 201 (1st session)
PHYS 202 PHYS 202 PHYS 202 (2nd session)
PHYS 203 PHYS 203

The series is offered annually or every two years at most of the regional campuses. Check the official schedule for details.

The courses are also offered via correspondence or credit by examination, but make sure you check with your advisor before selecting this option. This is generally not an option for students enrolled on the Athens Campus.

Textbook

Beginning Fall 2003, we will be using the text "Physics" by Cutnell and Johnson, 6th Edition. ISBN: 471151831. A student solutions manual and study guide are also available but are not required for the course. (Publisher Site) ( Cutnell and Johnson Student Companion Site)

A lab manual is published locally and is available in the bookstores. In addition, a protractor/ruler is required for lab.

Labs

A weekly 2-hour lab is associated with each course in the Physics 200 series. When registering for the course, you need to also make sure you register for a section of the lab. Labs typically do not meet the first week of the quarter. A full lab schedule should be made available to you with your syllabus. Please note that there is a minimum lab score required in order to pass the course. This mininum (typically 75% or better) will be given in the syllabus for your particular quarter.

Course Web Site

Specific materials for each quarter are available through LON-CAPA (Learning Online Network with Computer-Assisted Personalized Approach). All or part of your assignments will be available online through this system. Lecture materials, reading assignments, etc... may also be posted here. Once the course is available (ie., the beginning of the quarter), you will be able to access the system using your Oak ID as your username and your Oak Password as your LON-CAPA password. (Click here to access the system.)
