The Lightning Detection system that we use is run by a program called Lightning/2000 in cooperation with the Boltek lightning detector. The lightning detection system measures the static electric field in the atmosphere. Electric fields develop wherever there is an eletrical charge difference between the cloud and the ground. When this field becomes great enough it will cause a chain reaction to occur and produce lightning. The lightning detector detects sudden changes of static electric fields as lightning.
