By-laws of The Ohio University American Meteorological Society Student Chapter
Article I: Membership
Membership is open to anyone meeting the requirements as stated in Article IV section 1 of the Constitution. Anyone interested should contact the President or Vice President of the chapter.
There is a fee of five dollars for the chapter.
The officers are required to attend all meetings unless a reasonable excuse is offered. All other members are encouraged to attend meetings and contribute ideas. In addition to the annual five dollar membership fee, active members must attend at least 5 full chapter meetings a semester to remain an active member, unless a valid conflict is present.
Article II: Selection of Officers
The selection of officers and chairs shall be done through an election by the members of the chapter. The person that receives the majority vote will be the next elected official. If a vote involving any officer position results in a tie, the contested officers will first be given the option to concede. If a candidate is still not elected by concession, each candidate will be given the opportunity for another speech to the chapter, followed by a runoff vote. If after three runoff votes no winner is selected, then the contested position will become a joint position, with responsibilities divided as evenly as possible by the faculty advisor. Qualifications for office are as stated in Article VII Section 2 of the Constitution.
The provisions for removal of an officer or chair include stealing of funds for personal use, failing to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA, failing to perform assigned duties, failing to attend two successive meetings without a reasonable excuse, or any other dishonest actions.
If an officer or chair has committed any acts described in Article II Section 2, the President and Vice President will discuss the issue with the officers and chairs and decide whether or not to relieve the official from his/her respective position by majority vote.
Article III: Rules of Order
This organization shall be governed by "Robert's Rules of Order" in cases when it is applicable and consistent with the organizations constitution and bylaws.
Article IV: Storm Chasing
This organization does not endorse or organize storm chasing of any form. Storm chasing is a decision based solely on personal choice and the chapter assumes no responsibility for personal losses, damages or injuries.
Article V: Amendments and By-laws
The Constitution of the organization may be amended by a 3/4 majority vote of all paid chapter members who are present during officer meetings. If such instance occurs, all chapter members, including those not serving as an officer or chair, will be invited to the officer meeting and be permitted to vote. In the case of an unclear majority vote, an additional vote will be taken by all active members during a full chapter meeting and will require a majority vote.
Amendments to the Bylaws may be proposed by any member of the chapter. To propose an amendment, one must e-mail the President or Vice President with the proposed amendment and reasoning. The amendment will be voted upon during the proceeding officers meeting.
