Photometry of Irreguarly Shaped Objects

For some measurements, you may want to add up all the counts in one or more irregularly shaped regions. Basically you will be doing aperture photometry, but with a non-circular aperture.

The best approach is to use the DS9 image display to define a list of regions, save the list, reformat it into a .reg file that can be read by iraf, and then run the phot task on it. See these detailed instructions, courtesy of Harvey Mudd College.
