• During 1966-68, I was one of four grant officers in the Physics Division at the Army Research Office (Durham).  The ARO-D supported basic research in all areas of physics, primarily at universities, and awarded approximately $4.0 million annually.  I  was the lead grant officer in nuclear, astrophysics and theoretical physics, but also participated in the review of all the physics proposals and voted on grants proposed by the Chemistry, Operations Research, and Engineering Divisions at the Army Research Office (Durham).  As part of my job, I selected reviewers for grant proposals, visited principal investigators at their home university,  and participated in inter-agency grant officer meetings with my colleagues from the NSF and the Department of Energy.

• Upon joining the faculty at Ohio University in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1970, I participated in many service activities in the department and in the university and in 1987 was selected as the next Chair of the department in anticipation of new opportunities.  For two years, I served as Chair-apparent and advised the out-going Chair on plans for the future. In 1990, I assumed the position of Chair.

• During this period of time, the department hired twelve new faculty.  These included: Ken Hicks (1988); Martin Kordesch (1989) and David Ingram (1989) through the CMSS Program; Charlotte Elster(1991) through a special program for women in science; David Drabold (1993); Gerry Harp (1994); Allena Opper (1995); Tom Statler (1995); Joe Shields (1996); Larry Wilen (1996); Peter Jung (1997) and Normand Mousseau (1997).  In all cases, I played a significant role in the selection of these faculty, in obtaining start-up funds for them, and in helping them get established once they came to Athens.  During this same period, two established full professors in the department (Earle Hunt and Ron Cappelletti) obtained significant external funds for the first time.  The twelve new faculty plus the two full professors with new research support are currently bringing into the department well over $2,500,000 per year in external funds.  At the beginning of this period of change,  I helped guide the creation of the extremely successful CMSS Program and during my tenure as Chair, I encouraged the creation of the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics.

• In 1996-97, the Department of Physics and Astronomy  had  28 faculty (including part-timers and early retirees), 11 staff, 4 post-doctoral fellows, 55 graduate GA's, TA's and RA's and 10 undergraduate part-time employees.  The total budget for the department in 1996-97, including external research funds, exceeded $5,000,000.  The department had responsibility for parts of Clippinger, the Surface Science Laboratory and the Edwards Accelerator Building in addition to two classrooms in Morton Hall.

• In 1987-88, I chaired the Faculty Senate and for the years, 1997-99, I, once again, am chairing the Faculty Senate while on leave as Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  The Chair of the Faculty Senate serves as the Chair of the Committee on Committees, serves on UPAC, and meets regularly with the Provost and President in addition to organizing the Faculty Senate and holding monthly meetings.

• Since 1979, I have been Co-PI or PI on a series of research grants from the U.S. Department of  Energy and from 1992-95 was PI on a research grant from NATO.  These grants all required periodic renewal proposals and annual reports where the research findings were reported and the monies expended were accounted for.
